What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

In TCM, herbal medicine has been used for centuries alongside therapies such as Acupuncture. Formulas often combine several ingredients—including roots, leaves, flowers or seeds—rather than relying on a single herb.

The choice and proportions of ingredients are guided by traditional TCM patterns and an individual’s overall health picture. A formula may change over time as circumstances and needs change. This traditional approach is distinct from how modern medicine classifies diseases and studies individual ingredients.

Common questions

What are TCM herbal formulas?

A TCM herbal formula is a combination of selected traditional medicinal ingredients. Different herbs and proportions are combined according to a TCM assessment rather than choosing one herb for a single symptom.

How are herbal formulas personalized?

Your practitioner considers your health history, current concerns, medications and supplements, and uses a TCM assessment to determine whether herbal medicine is appropriate. If it is, an individual formula is prescribed and explained. Your practitioner may adjust it over time.

What forms do the herbs come in?

Depending on the prescription and dispensary, herbs may be available as dried ingredients, concentrated granules or other preparations. Your practitioner will explain how your prescribed form should be prepared and used.

Where do I get my prescribed herbs?

Aloe Health provides the consultation and prescription but does not sell or dispense Chinese herbal products. You purchase them from an independent dispensary, and the cost of the herbs is separate from the consultation fee.

Can I take Chinese herbal medicine with my current medications?

Some herbs can interact with medications or supplements. Tell your practitioner what you are taking, including over-the-counter products, so suitability can be assessed and any needed coordination with your other healthcare providers can be discussed.

Are herbal consultations covered by insurance?

Check your individual extended healthcare plan: coverage for TCM or herbal consultation services varies. Most BC extended-health plans do not cover the cost of Chinese herbal products themselves. Herbs are purchased separately from an independent dispensary.
